RN_Device_USB_Flash_Drive_2.jpg

A USB flash drive is an easy to transport memory flash RAM chip that can help you take information from one computer to another. You insert your USB flash drive into a USB port in a computer and a wizard will come up to help you.

willie1.jpg

If the wizard does not come to the rescue, no problem. It is still a couple simple steps to success. At the Windows Vista desktop, open the "Computer" window by going to the start window button and clicking on "Computer". Double-click the drive with your flash dirve in….mine happens to be "K" as shown below.

willie3.jpg

If your USB flash drive is not named you may want to consider doing this. It will make it easy to find no matter the computer you use. Once you have located your flash drive right click it and click on "Rename". You may use up to 11 characters to identify Flash Drive.

willie4.jpg

To save to your USB flash drive Right click on your file then "Send to" locate your flash drive and save.
You can organize files on your USB flash drive by going to your top left hand corner and pulling down "organzie", "new folder", then type in the name of your folder. You can drag and drop any folders you want after saving.

organize333.jpg

All done using your drive. Here is how you remove your drive safely. On the bottom right you can click on the remove safely icon and click on it. Once it comes up you click on the drive your flash drive is in. You can also go to the start menu, Computer and locate the drive. Right click it and push "Safely remove". This will help you not risk losing any important data.

There are several ways you can go about backing up your data. You could use a stand alone application to create an "image" of
the system drive and copy it to another Hard Drive, or you may just drag and drop files and folders onto another volume attached to your computer.
Current versions of Windows and Mac Operating Systems even ship with built in utilities that are more than suitable for anything but enterprise requirements.
What technique will be best suited for any one person depends on to many variables to list; however I will say the "drag n drop" tec is better suited for those
working with multiple computers and even different Operating Systems, whereas a full system back up is ideal for people working with only on or two
computers in their home and no need to move large amounts of data around.

You have many choices when it comes to back up hardware. You could drag n drop data on to a floppy disk or more likely a flash card/drive,
and carry your data right in your pocket. You could also write or "burn" files to a CD or DVD, though this makes it difficult and expensive to
update or modify your backup. Unless you pay extra for Rewrite able media, your going to end up with a stack of coasters. Another option is to purchase a secondary
Hard Drive, usually "External" and powered by the USB connection, or a separate power source. If your backing up more than 4-5 GB, or planning to do a full
system back up this is the best option. A dedicated back up drive will get little wear and tear if it just sits on your desk, and is only running when back ups
are preformed. Hard Drives have their downsides too, they have moving parts, they're bulky, and the most expensive option (The actual price per GB, compared to
flash media, is much cheaper however.

Again, what option is best for you depends on your needs. You'll likely find yourself using more than one.

tpanda4.jpg

You're backup medium will be connected directly or through cables/adapters; to your computers connection ports (usually USB 2.0).
After connecting your device it will appear under My Computer and may need formatting. Right click on it and select format, a small
window will pop up with format options. If your using a flash drive use FAT32, if its a hard drive make it NTFS. Give it a good label,
and deselect quick format, it may take several minutes, but your volume will be formatted.

Now its time to pick a back up technique and implement it.

tpanda3.jpg

Using the drag n drop method, simply open your backup volume in one window, and have a second window open to navigate the local HDD and find files
and folders that you want to back up, and drag them to the backup volume window and they'll be copied to it. Simple, but this method can be confusing when
dealing with a large quantity of directories or unorganizeda data.

tpanda1.jpg

If you want to use the back-up utility built into windows, you can find it in the Control Panel/System And Security pane, or In the matenince folder in the start menu.
Click on "Set Up a Backup" and you will be given a list of drives that can be used for back up, pick the one you formatted for this purpose.

After this you will be given a choice how windows handles the backup, by default it will backup all user data and create a system image that can restore
your computer as it was backed up, even if the local hard drive dies, the entire system can be restored to a new drive. You can also choose to only back up specific files
and folders, and exclude the system images. Once you've made your choice you simply have to wait for windows to write the data. A complete system image
alone could take an hour or more, longer if you have lots of data.

tpanda5.jpg
tpanda2.jpg

And thats how you backup your data, as you do it more often you'll find what techniques, software, and hardware are best suited for you. For now, you have peace
of mind that your data is intact and secure. Your hard drive or computer WILL break down eventually, its only a matter of time. This is what makes data
back ups essential for everybody.
